Stichting TEUN
family first

Our family

We are a family of 4: dad Erik, mom Danielle, big brother Pepijn and of course, Teun.

Erik is 38 years old and works as a youth worker in Tilburg. He played football for over 27 years, but in the last 5 years he has switched to running.

Danielle is also 38 and works as an occupational therapist in Breda. Danielle is a great mother and spends her free time mainly with her boys.

Pepijn is 9 years old, is in group 5 at school and is a real football fanatic. Pepijn is a true big brother, who helps Teun when he needs it. But they’re also just boys, who can squabble over the smallest thing.

Teun is 6 years old, is in group 2 and, just like his brother, is a big football fan. In 2018 Teun started playing football in a team for children with special needs and enjoys every moment of it.

Why a foundation?

Stichting TEUN (the TEUN Foundation) was established on 5 October 2018 by Erik and Danielle, the parents of the then 5-year-old Teun. Teun has the rare progressive muscle disease Emery-Dreifuss muscular dystrophy.

As parents we want to do anything and everything we can in order to offer Teun a meaningful life. Doing nothing is just not an option. And although EUR 500,000 sounds like an almost impossible target, we are going to do everything we can to raise this amount.

The Foundation is committed to raising money to finance research, but also to give Teun all the equipment needed to make his life the best it can be.

The plan

goals

  • Start and finance research, which will hopefully lead to a treatment that can cure muscle diseases.
  • Seek and organise expertise so that treatment guidelines are established in the Netherlands for similar muscle diseases.

Increase awareness of Emery-Dreifuss muscular dystrophy.

  • Finance the resources that are needed so that Teun can lead his life as independently as possible.

Mission

We are appealing to the business community, to businesses which want to commit, to sponsor, and are willing to set up activities for this disease. We are calling on local supermarkets, as well as large multinationals, to stand up for Stichting TEUN.

In addition, the foundation itself will organise campaigns and activities that are intended to raise awareness and thus generate more revenue. Keep an eye on the website and the various social media to know what is going to be organised. If you have any ideas for activities, let us know!

Will you stand up for Teun?

the founding

starting out…

Setting up a foundation was the best way to get the best out of life for Teun, but this would not have been possible without a number of key people:

– The boardermembers: Toine, Chantal and Jelko

Imke Nijbelen-Ottenheim by Imgraphic Design

Anouk Daal

Dimitry van den Broek by Di-Sign

Thank you for your time, effort and energy!

The board of Stichting TEUN

Chairman:

Erik Verbunt

Teun’s father

I’m Erik, Teun and Pepijn’s father. As a father, I want to do everything for my children, which is why Danielle and I formed the Foundation. Our goal is to raise money through various activities in order to give our son everything he needs. Ideally, I would want him to be free of this disease, but I also know that a cure is still a long way off.

What the Foundation has given us to date is priceless. Our hearts are filled with love and warmth from the tremendous involvement of family, friends, neighbours, colleagues, acquaintances and complete strangers.

I therefore want to thank everyone for their commitment, time, energy and kind and supportive words and gestures.

Together with these fantastic board members, we will make every effort to raise as much money as possible for the benefit of Stichting TEUN.

I am proud of my lovely family, my strong wife and my terrific boys Pepijn and Teun. I am so proud to be your husband and father.

Erik

Vice-chairman:

Toine de Kort

Teun’s neighbour

Hello, my name is Toine de Kort. I’m married to Rian and have a son and a daughter, Roy and Kim. I’m Erik and Danielle’s neighbour. Delightful, naughty little boys that I see growing up.

I remember, as if it were yesterday, when some doubts started arising about Teun’s health and the uncertainty that that entailed for the whole family. I find it very sad that Teun can’t move about like his brother! I am a real football enthusiast and I am sorry that Teun cannot play football like other children of his age. We went to a football match together and it was wonderful to see how much he enjoyed it. I also took him to the fire department and he was allowed to sit in the fire truck. We really enjoyed it, together with Erik and Pepijn! We will certainly go places together more often.

Consequently, I did not hesitate for a moment when Erik asked me if I wanted to be on the board of “Stichting TEUN”. I am committed to raising as much money as possible for the Foundation so that Teun receives the treatment and equipment he needs to keep moving around as much as possible! Furthermore, I am fully dedicated to raising funds so research can be done on Teun’s disease (Emery- Dreifuss muscular dystrophy). I definitely intend to contribute to the setting up of campaigns and activities to raise money – because a lot of money is needed!!!!

Greetings from neighbour Toine

Secretary:

Jelko Sweegers

Erik’s best friend

My name is Jelko Sweegers and many years ago Erik and I were at college together. Our studies took place at the Sports College, where we graduated as gym teachers. After graduation I moved to Zeeland, but always kept in touch with Erik and Daniëlle.

In Zeeland I received news about the birth of both boys, Pepijn and Teun. I too became a father. I got to know Teun and Pepijn as pleasant, sweet and cheerful boys (they still believe that all of Zeeland is mine!). I empathised very much with the family when it became clear that something was wrong with Teun’s physical development. This touched me deeply, because as a parent you feel how heart wrenching this must be. It is even more affecting on a personal level, because as a sports enthusiast I believe that a child should have the opportunity to move about and play sports in the way he wants. As this is unfortunately not possible for Teun, I want to help where I can.

My goal is to try and raise a lot of money so that Teun can move as often and as much as possible. In addition, by raising funds I can also support research into Emery-Dreifuss muscular dystrophy. In April I will walk 42,195 metres with Erik in the Paris marathon. I hope that these steps will generate a lot of money, after which we can start thinking about the next “steps” to raise money. Will you help too?

Treasurer:

Chantal Beaumont

Teun’s Aunt

My name is Chantal and I have the pleasure of being the auntie of Teun, a super happy, waggish and mischievous nephew!

Every child should be able to enjoy life to the full, and mentally Teun does so more than 100%, but physically his body holds him back, because he is limited by his muscle disease. Some movements are difficult or even impossible for him, while he is so eager to participate and keen to do things himself, without help. This is not how a little boy should have to live – we have to do something!

Through Stichting TEUN and with as many donors as possible, my goal is that we raise a lot of money (and I really mean a lot of money) to have research done on Teun’s muscle disease.

Teun must be able to continue enjoying life and I hope that one day an answer will be found that stops the progression of this disease, or at least keeps it stable, and even better: helps him to physically progress.

Teun is a smashing lad and if I can contribute to making his life better and freer in any way, then I’m ready to do so. I cannot do research into his muscle disease, but I can help to ensure that others do, and I am more than 100% ready to do so.
